Medical Science has failed to solve Back Pain

A costly epidemic

Lower back pain is among the chief reasons people go to see a doctor in the North America. In the US, nearly a third of American adults say they’ve been afflicted.

The US spends approximately $90 billion a year on back pain — more than the annual expenditures on high blood pressure, pregnancy and postpartum care, and depression — and that doesn’t include the estimated $10 billion to $20 billion in back pain-related lost productivity.

In Canada, the cost of medical expenditures alone for low back pain are estimated between $6 and $12 billion annually, with additional costs associated with the impact on society due to the loss in worker productivity from time off work and the associated disability payments.

Doctors have overwhelmingly failed people with back pain.

Many of the most popular treatments on offer — bed rest, spinal surgery, opioid painkillerssteroid injections — have been proven ineffective in the majority of cases, and sometimes downright harmful. Only in the past couple of years, with the rise of the opioid epidemic, has the medical establishment begun to acknowledge this failure and suggest people explore alternatives for their sore backs.

Responses to the Low Back Pain Epidemic

Low back pain has also been one of the key drivers for opioid prescription. With increasing awareness of its risks, limited efficacy and potential for misuse, emerging evidence has suggested that medication should not be the mainstay in the treatment of low back pain.

Instead, recent guidelines recommend self-management, manual therapy, physical activity and psychological therapies. There is a shift in placing less emphasis on pharmacological and surgical interventions in the care of low back pain.

In fact, informed surgeons and medical Doctors suggest exhausting all non-surgical and non-pharmacological options before seeking medial intervention.

Chiropractic for Back Pain and more

It is commonly known that Chiropractic is an extremely effective and natural way to alleviate back pain, but did you know that it also helps with headaches, numbness, tingling, low-energy, poor sleep patterns, and many other disruptive symptoms and ailments?

While Chiropractic adjustments are a manipulation and alignment of the spinal vertebrae, what also happens is a release of pressure on the spinal cord, allowing the central nervous system to function optimally. Since the CNS is the master controller of all body functions, it is important that it functions without interference so that the body’s natural regulatory and self-healing processes can occur.
